Realistic sea turtle tattoo on skin
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A detailed sea turtle is shown in profile, swimming up and to the right with its head raised. The brown and tan shell and the scaled flippers are rendered with fine shading and highlights. Soft teal and blue washes behind the turtle suggest water, and the composition fills most of the frame.

The net came up grey and heavy over the gunwale of the Maudlin, and Tamsin knew from the weight of it that the morning would cost them. Her father hauled from the winch with his jaw set, the way he did when the price of diesel was on his mind. Then the mesh shifted and something inside it thrashed, a slow, furious heave that rocked the boat.

It was a turtle, a big one, its shell the colour of wet bracken and its flippers ridged like old leather armour. The mesh had wound round its neck and one front flipper, and the more it fought the tighter the knots pulled. Dennis, the second hand, swore and reached for the bolt cutters. "That's a thirty-pound job for the scrap merchant if we're quick about it," he said, and nobody argued, because nobody on the Maudlin had been paid properly in a month.
Tamsin got there first. She took the gutting knife from its sheath and knelt on the wet deck, her knees soaking through, and began picking the twine apart one knot at a time, the way her grandmother had taught her to mend pots on the quay at Scarrow. The turtle's eye, dark as a bead of jet, watched her the whole time. Its breath came in long wheezes that smelled of salt and weed.
It took her the better part of twenty minutes. Her father kept the engine ticking over and said nothing, which was its own kind of permission. When the last loop slid free, the turtle lay still for a moment, as if deciding whether it trusted them. Then it shouldered over the rail and dropped into the teal water with a soft slap. Tamsin leaned over and watched it turn, unhurried, its shell catching the light like a stained window, rising towards the blue until the shadow of it was just a suggestion and then not even that. A scrap of green mesh stuck to her glove. She left it there.
