Realistic owl on a branch on the back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A detailed owl with speckled grey and white plumage sits on a branch, turning its head toward the viewer with an amber eye. Soft shading builds the feathers, while warm brown and purple washes sit behind the bird alongside thin grass stems and dark arc lines. The design is centred on the subject, with the wash and arcs framing the owl on bare skin.

Don't you go lighting that lamp yet, love. The owl's still on the towpath post, and she doesn't like being looked at while she's deciding. Sit by the coal. My father worked the Trent with a boat called the Patience, and the winter he was nineteen the ice came in so hard that the lock keepers at Hollin Cross sent everyone home.

Being him, he stayed. He had a sack of oats, a tin of cocoa and a cabin the width of a coffin, and he tied up under a dead willow where the water went purple at dusk. Every night an owl came down onto the same broken branch above him, the speckled sort, grey as wet slate, and turned its whole head round to look at him as if he owed it money. Its eye was amber, like whisky held up to a window.
He talked to it, because there was nobody else. He told it about the grass that poked up through the frost, thin as stitching, and about a woman in Alderbrook who had promised him a wedding and then promised the same to a fishmonger. The owl listened and never once looked away. Some nights it left a field mouse on the bank by way of reply, and he'd say thank you and mean it.
Then the thaw came in a single night, all groaning and cracking. He woke to the Patience drifting free and the willow gone under. The owl sat on the rail of his cabin roof, watching him. He never saw it again, though my mother swore she'd seen one at Hollin Cross the week I was born, which is how I came to be named after a river and not a saint. Mind the stove now.
