Realistic skull with feathered headdress design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed drawing of a human skull with a feathered headdress, framed by a radiating burst of long feathers. The linework is minimal and the forms are built from soft, layered shading with strong contrast and fine highlights on the bone and feathers. The design is in black and grey only and is centred on a white sheet resting on a wooden surface.

The man left the box on my counter at closing, and I have never once lifted its lid without wishing I had sent him back out into the rain. Inside, folded in tissue gone the colour of weak tea, lay a skull with yellowed teeth, crowned with a bonnet of long feathers so fine they lifted when I breathed on them. He wanted four pounds ten for it. I wrote the ticket in the name of Mr Ambrose Vell, Hartlepool, and pinned it to the shelf between a brass cornet and a treadle sewing machine.

All winter the feathers came loose. I found them on the floorboards each morning, grey-black and light as ash, and I swept them into the dustpan and tipped them out back by the bins. Each morning there seemed to be more than had fallen the day before. The ticket curled at its corners. Nobody came for the skull, and nobody asked after it, which in a shop like mine is how you know a thing has become yours whether you wanted it or not.
In March a woman came in wanting a fortnight's loan on her late father's signet ring. She saw the box open on the shelf and went very still. Her grandmother, she said, had kept a headdress like that in a hatbox under the stairs, and had burned it the week the house was sold, because she could not bear to have it looked at. She asked if I would sell it to her. I told her it was not mine to sell. She asked whose it was then, and I looked at the ticket, and found I had no answer I could put in a ledger.
I wrapped the skull again in its tissue and tucked the ticket into the fold. Then I wrote beneath Mr Vell's name, in the plain hand I use for everything: redeemed by whoever comes asking, no charge. The next morning there was one feather on the counter, and I left it where it lay.
