Sugar skull with roses and heart design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed drawing of a sugar skull with hollow eyes and a grinning row of teeth, surrounded by open roses with shaded petals and leaves. A filigree heart sits above the skull, with a lotus flower below the jaw. Fine linework and soft grey shading give the design depth against the cream paper, which fills the frame.

The officer at booth four turns the sugar skull over in his gloved hands the way you might test a melon, and you watch the filigree heart catch the strip light. Behind you a lorry idles and somebody sounds a horn twice. The parcel label says ANA in your aunt's capitals, and you have rehearsed the explanation for three hundred miles: she was a baker, she made these every October, and the roses are shaded with a brush she never let anyone else touch.

He asks what the roses are made of. Sugar and egg white, you tell him, though the thing in your hands is only a drawing she sent with the recipe, the cream paper soft at the corners from handling. He tilts the grin toward the light and taps one tooth with a fingernail. "Your aunt did the teeth?" She did, you say. She always did the teeth last, because she said a skull that smiles has already decided it is not afraid.
He stamps the form without looking at it again and slides the drawing back across the counter. "Keep it flat," he says, "or the lotus will crack." You fold the tea towel over the heart, the three roses and the grin, and walk out under the sodium lights into a car park full of people carrying things they will not declare. You think of her grinning up at the sky with the brush in her hand, as though the sky had finally told her a joke worth keeping.
