I went up to the Gaunt Street shop on Saturday, the one with the bell that sticks, because Dennis Crowe swore the man there could draw anything from a photograph. He drew your face for me from memory, though I hadn't told him a thing about you beyond the colour of your hair. He had a way of shading with his thumb and a rag, pulling the grey soft at the cheek and leaving the mouth almost black, so it looked like you were about to say something you'd regret. I told him to put a rose behind you. He asked which rose. I said the one that never opens.

It cost me three weeks of wages and my mother has not spoken to me since, but I have it now, and the petals fold over your eye the way the curtain did in the front room the night you wouldn't look at me. I am not asking you to answer. I only wanted you to know it is done, and that the man at the shop said the shading would take years to fade if I looked after it.
