Realistic rose with water droplets on an arm
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose in a realistic style fills most of the frame, with soft curled petals shown in smooth greys and deep black shadows. Small raised droplets sit along the outer petals, adding a wet, dimensional effect. The rose is set against darker, textured shading that fades toward the edges, with the limb only partly visible.

Mind the step there, and don't go pushing past the tea trolley. I'll tell it while the rain's still dripping off the canopy, because that's how Nell Haddow always told it, standing exactly where the ironwork leaks.

Her grandmother ran the buffet at Carrick Road in the years when the coast train still ran twice a day. Every morning before the 6.10, a young porter called Albert Simms came up the cutting carrying a single red rose wrapped in brown paper, and every morning he left it on the bench beside the milk churns. By noon it was always gone. The stationmaster swore the pigeons took them, which was nonsense, because pigeons don't trim a stalk that neatly.
Then one February the rose came back grey. The rain had soaked through the paper and the petals had gone the colour of old pewter, and on the outer ones sat little beads of water, heavy as shillings, catching the lamplight. Albert stood there a long while looking at it. Then he tipped the drops onto the line, one by one, and said to the empty bench, "Well, you've kept better than I have."
Next morning the bench was bare, and nobody saw him board the 6.10. Nell's grandmother swept the platform herself and found a second parcel tucked behind the churns, unopened, with a single word pencilled on the wrapping: Dorothy. She never learned who Dorothy was. She only ever said that the rose had been right to hold onto its water, because the line outside still shines wet in the morning, and you can see the rails from here.
