Pocket watch and roses on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of an open pocket watch with Roman numeral markings and a detailed inner mechanism, shown above a cluster of shaded roses and leaves. The linework is soft and the shading builds smooth tonal gradients across the watch case, petals and foliage. The image shows the same tattoo in two side-by-side photographs, one a close view and one a slightly wider angle, with the arm cropped at the edges.

Dear Tomasz, the coach gave up outside Calder Flats, which is a petrol pump, a cafe with no door and a dog that answers to nothing, and I have been sitting on a stranger's tailgate since noon watching the road shake in the heat like a sheet on a line. I am writing this on the back of a timetable because my hands want something to do.

You will remember Dad's pocket watch, the one with the Roman numerals worn almost to nothing and the open back where he kept Mum's pressed rose. It stopped the morning he drove to Ashby, and I never had the nerve to wind it. I brought it in my bag. Yesterday I finally asked the man at the pump, Ruben, who had oil to the elbows and a soft voice, whether he could look at it.

He sat on an upturned crate and opened the case with a bent knife, tilting it toward the sun so the little wheels caught the light. He said the mainspring was fine and the trouble was only dried oil, a bit of paraffin and an afternoon's patience. Then he held it up to my ear. It was ticking. Not loudly, but steady, like someone walking behind you on a stair.

I did not ask him to set it. I told him to leave the hands where they were, twenty past four, the hour Dad left and the hour the rose on the inside lid went brown. Ruben shrugged and said time is only a matter of where you start counting. So I am sitting here with a watch that runs and a bus that does not, and I have decided the coach can wait too. Come and find me. Bring the good tin of biscuits and a spare key.
