Colour tattoo on a limb of the red Rebel Alliance starbird emblem with two orange banners reading Rebel and Scum, in a traditional style.

Rebel Alliance emblem with Rebel Scum banners

Traditional · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the red Rebel Alliance starbird emblem, with its crescent-shaped wings and upward arrow, centred on the skin. Two orange scroll banners cross the emblem, reading Rebel above and Scum below, in a script lettering style. Bold black outlines and soft shading in red, orange and green give the design a traditional look against a plain, lightly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The customs clerk on Tessaly Dock stamped our crew's name in red across the manifest, and beneath it, in cramped handwriting, the word scum. Mags Okonedo read it aloud at the mess table and laughed until she had to wipe her eyes on a greasy sleeve. By the next shift she had painted the word along the flank of our tug, and above it the bird we had doodled on ration chits for years: a red crest, wings curled like a crescent moon, an arrow thrusting up through the middle.

The bird got us through things. A red crest on a cargo hull made the scanners at the Wenn gate blink and look elsewhere, and a crew that had been called scum learned quickly which inspectors could be talked round and which could not. We ran medicine down the spiral in the hollow of our fuel cells. Each time a magistrate's man read the word on our hull with his lip curled, he waved us through faster than he meant to.

Three years on, the same clerk limped down to the dock with a bundle of papers under one arm. His daughter had been aboard the Harrow Lading when the outer ring lost pressure, and the only ship still taking refugees was the one with the insult painted on it. He asked if we had room. Mags did not answer him straight away. She took the stamp he had carried in his coat, pressed it onto the first form, and wrote underneath in her blocky capitals: ours now.

The rain came sideways off the water. Under the dock lamps the red bird on our hull looked bright as a struck match, and nobody aboard flinched at the word beneath it any more.
