A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of January the ground under the top orchard has gone hard enough to ring underfoot, and your uncle still hasn't said a word about the gate. You find it where the hedge bends: an old iron ring with two hooked arms curling out from a bar that stands straight up through the middle, dark with rust and furred with frost. Someone hung it there years ago to tie the sheep hurdles to, and then the hedge grew over it and forgot.

You cut the brambles back with the loppers, and beneath the frost the rose bush that has grown through the iron is still green at the root. Its canes have wound the arms the way a hand closes around a rail. Last June it bore dark red flowers that the bees fought over, and your gran used to float them in a glass bowl by the sink. Now it is all thorn and waiting.

You fetch the wire cutters, then stop. Your uncle comes up the lane on the quad, sees you kneeling in the hedge bottom with your palms bleeding, and says nothing for a long while. Then he tells you the bush was her idea, that she planted it against the iron so the iron would have something to hold besides the wind.

You leave the canes where they are. In March the first leaves push through, and by June the ring is hidden under red, the rust showing only at the joints where the roses can't reach. You take the glass bowl down from the shelf and cut one bloom for the kitchen window.
