Helmet and roses on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded helmet with a dark T-shaped visor sits at the centre, flanked by scrollwork and leaves. Three large roses in soft grey tones sit below it, and a small red starburst with a dark stem-like shape rises on the upper left. The fine shading gives the metal and petals strong highlights, and the composition fills the upper thigh with the design against the skin.

The gatehouse roof has finally given way, and rain comes through onto the flagstones where the portcullis chain used to hang. You kneel in the wet with a rag and a tin of lamp oil, working the grime from the helm you pulled out of the moat last week. Beneath the crust the steel still holds a shine, and the dark T of the visor sits as square as the day someone bolted it on.

Roses have taken the outer wall, their pale heads heavy after the rain, and the old steward used to say they were planted to hide the breaches. Ivy has swallowed the carved leaves that once framed the arms above the arch. Every evening you climb to the broken battlement to watch the coast road, where a flare-man's red starburst once told the garrison that the tide had turned. Nothing has signalled from the headland in eleven years.
Tonight, when you hold the helm up to the lamp, a red light answers from the far cliffs, bright as a spark struck from flint. You snatch the cloak from its peg, fumble the lantern, and take the stair two steps at a time with the helm tucked under your arm, rust flaking from its scrolled edge onto your sleeve.
At the foot of the causeway a stranger waits in the mist, a single grey rose held loose in one gloved hand. They do not lower it when you raise the lantern. They only nod at the helm, as if you were the one who had been expected all along.
