Red and black dragonfly on a lower leg
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A dragonfly is drawn in heavy black outlines with red fill across its wings and head, with a black body decorated with small red hearts. The design is symmetrical and centred on the leg, with the wings spread wide and the body running down toward the ankle. The skin is evenly lit and the linework is crisp and solid.

The paint tin had frozen overnight, so Nell Trevithick warmed the red ochre against the kitchen range before she dared touch the brush. Outside, the yard was white to the gate and the hens had stopped complaining about it. On the bench by the window lay the dragonfly, a flat length of sycamore no longer than her forearm, its wings already blacked in along the heavy lines her father had taught her to draw before she could spell.

Her father had never carved in winter. He said the grain sulked in the cold and split if you pushed it, so the summer work waited for July, when dragonflies came down the brook in their dozens to rest on the fence wire. Nell had been stubborn about the timing this year. The fair at Carrick Mill wanted pieces for the stall by February, and the cheque would keep the tractor running through lambing.
She cut the body last, a narrow spine down to the foot of the board, then the hearts, one after another, each no wider than a barleycorn. Halfway down she stopped. Her nephew Owen had carved the first heart at nine years old, crooked and proud, and she had never had the nerve to cut it out. She left it. The brush hovered over the red, then dipped, and she filled the wings, each stroke sealing its black edge like a latch dropping into place.
When the paint dried she carried the dragonfly to the window. The sun had come low over the frozen field and lit the red so it looked wet. She thought of July, of the brook, of Owen coming up the lane with his boots full of water. Then she set the board on the sill where the light could find it, and went out to break the ice on the trough.
