Red and cream mandala on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A symmetrical mandala with a dark central star surrounded by layered red and cream petals and dark leaf shapes. Bold black outlines define the forms, with solid fills and soft grey shading on the leaves. Red, peach, brown and black ink dominate the composition, which fills the frame against a blurred floral shirt on the right.

Nobody in Oskerly believed the Lantern Queen would pay for a window that did not yet exist, so my mother painted it on the palace wall first, in red lead and cream chalk, to prove the glass could be done. She worked from the ceiling of the old chapel, where a single dark star had been carved into the stone and never coloured. I held the pots. I was nine and thought the star was the hole where the sky had leaked out.

Each petal was a day's work. The cream was made from ground shell and goat's milk, the red from the crushed beetles that came up the river in autumn, and the leaves were brown and black, the colour of the marsh beyond the walls where the Queen's brother was said to be hiding. Mother would not paint him. She said a window should only show what has been forgiven. So the leaves went in plain, and the star stayed empty at the centre, a dark knot the eye could fall into and rest.
The Queen came on the feast of Saint Tallow to see the drawing. She stood a long while before the centre and asked what the dark was for. Mother said it was for the people who would look at it when they could not bear the light, and the Queen laughed and said that was the cheapest thing she had ever heard. Then she put her gloved finger on the black star and left a smear of red across it.
We never got the window. The Queen was gone by spring, and the palace was given to the marsh folk, who kept the wall as it was. Last year I went back. The lead had cracked and the cream had gone the colour of old teeth, but the red still held, and in the middle, where her finger had been, the dark star had a small bright pinprick in it, as if something had finally been let in.
