Outline lotus flower on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical lotus flower drawn in single black outlines, with layered petals radiating from a central bud and a few small pointed shapes at the edges. The linework is even and clean, and the design is left unshaded and unfilled so the skin shows through. The photo is taken close up against a plain light background, with a partial line of lettering visible at the top right edge of the frame.

I gave him the chair nearest the range and a bowl of barley broth, and he thanked me by asking whether I had a pair of compasses. I didn't, but my late husband's drawing set was still in the dresser drawer, and he seemed glad of it.

All evening he drew at the kitchen table while the wind worked at the shutters. He never showed me the card. He only talked, in the slow way of a man who had spent forty years making plans for other people's buildings, about a flower that grows in pond mud and opens clean every morning. 'It doesn't keep the dirt,' he said. 'It just goes up through it.' I asked him whether that was a sermon. He laughed and said it was only geometry, really, and geometry is just patience with a ruler.
In the morning the road was ploughed and his boots were gone from the mat. He had left the set on the table, and on the window the night's breath had cleared into a pattern, petal inside petal, as if someone had drawn on the glass with a fingertip. I stood a long while watching the sun reach it. Under the teapot he had left a folded bill, paid for three nights, and on the back in neat pencil: The rest is only layers.
