Red and gold mandala on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A circular mandala tattoo shows a central eight-petal flower surrounded by layered red, gold, cream and grey leaf shapes and a red outer ring with small dot details. Bold black outlines define each section, with flat fills and little visible shading. Teal accents sit at the points of the outer leaves, and the design is centred on the forearm against a brick wall.

The stove has gone out again and you are kneeling on the cabin roof with a tin of red lead, trying to finish the roundel your aunt started before her hands gave out. The Thames at Brentford smells of diesel and low tide. Somebody on the towpath is shouting for a dog called Pilot, and the dog is ignoring them.

She painted the roses on the coal boats in the forties, and she said every flower on a barge had to work as a compass, something to steer back by. Her roundel is eight red petals with a gold leaf between each, cream rings, and small dots set round the rim like lamps in a town seen from the water. You copy it from the paper pattern pinned under a jam jar lid, counting the petals twice because you lost count once and the whole thing came out lopsided.
A man in a brown coat stops on the bank and asks whether the boat is for sale. You say no, and he nods as though he expected that, looking at the paint instead of you. He asks what the circle is for. You tell him it is for finding the middle when the river has moved everything else. He laughs, not unkindly, and walks on toward the lock.
By dusk the outer ring is done and the teal points, the last colour she mixed herself, are drying at the tips of the leaves. You climb down and light the stove. On the back of the pattern, in her pencil, there is a line you had not noticed: start in the middle, and the rest will know where it goes. You had been working from the edge all along.
