Red cardinal on a berry branch
Colour · Flash
A stylised red cardinal perches on a thin branch, with its head turned to the left and a black mask around the beak. The feathers are rendered in red with white patterned linework, and the tail extends down the right side of the image. Small red berries hang from a sprig at the lower left, and the background is plain white.

Dear Marrin, The frost has held the lane for nine days now, and Mother has stopped pretending the cart can get as far as the church. I walk the milk up from the Hollins farm myself. On the way back I pass the old hedge where the blackthorn grows out over the ditch, and that is where the cardinal has been sitting since Tuesday.

I know you will say I am making up birds to fill a page. He is no more made up than the rooks. Red as a fresh-cut apple, with a black mask over his beak like a highwayman, and his crest raised as if someone has insulted him. The feathers on his back are not plain either. Someone with great patience has inked white lines across every one of them, swirls and little ladders, the way Grandfather cut the lintel above the dairy door. When the sun drops low he flashes like a coal that someone has just blown on.
Yesterday he dropped to the ditch and took a berry from the sprig that grows there, the bright red ones you said were poison and we ate anyway. He held it sideways, turning it, then carried it across to the stile and left it on the wood. I went to look. It was the only thing on the stile that morning, pale as a tooth, and I did not touch it. I think he was giving it to someone, though I could not say who.
I have decided to stay until the thaw. The bird has no reason to mind me, and I have no reason to mind the lane. If you come home at Easter, bring the good thread and the fine needles, and we will see whether I can learn to draw him properly before he goes north. Your loving sister, Ada.
