Rainbow line art hummingbird in flight

Fine line · Colour · Flash

A single hummingbird is shown in mid-flight, facing left with a long black beak and an open wing raised above its body. The bird is drawn with thin, flowing contour lines and small scale-like strokes on the chest and wing, with no solid shading. The lines shift through a rainbow gradient from red and orange through green and blue to purple, set against a plain pale blue background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The window in bay six had been stuck open since the summer, and nobody on nights had got round to filling in a form for it. At twenty past three I found a hummingbird hanging in the corridor light above the sluice, beating so fast it looked less like a bird than a smudge of colour someone had forgotten to rub out. Its beak was black and as long as a hatpin. Every few seconds it dropped, caught itself, and rose again towards the ceiling tiles.

Nobody believed me when I said it was a hummingbird. Dev from bed management said pigeon, and Maureen, who had worked nights since before the new wing went up, said starlings got in all the time and the sensible thing was to leave them be. But I had seen the green of its back turn to red at the wingtips, then blue down the throat, and I knew what it wanted. Anything that flies wants a way up and out, and a corridor only has the one way, which is down to the lifts.

I took a clean pillowcase from the linen trolley and waited by the open window, the wind coming cold off the car park. The bird went past my ear twice, then settled for a moment on the sill with its wings lifted, as if it were deciding whether the sky was worth the trouble. Then it was gone, a thread of light across the dark.

Maureen came in at half four with two teas and asked where the pigeon had got to. I told her it had left. She didn't ask anything else, which is the kindest thing anyone does on nights.
