Dear Ada, we pitched on the rec at Tanner's Green on Tuesday, and the whole field smells of paraffin and wet canvas. You'll remember Mr Lusk, who eats fire by the big top. He lost his temper with the generator on Thursday and singed one wing off his hen, Mab, so now she sulks in a crate under the cocoa stall. Her feathers came away like spent matches. They were the only red ones on the lot, and the wind kept stealing them off the grass.

I picked one up by the dodgems. It was near black at the root, where the flame had licked it, and it brightened toward the tip like a coal someone was blowing on. I held it up to the lamp and tried to mix the shade in my tin, and I couldn't get it. Lusk laughed and said nothing on a midway ever comes out the colour you want.
