Red geometric circle across both forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A pair of forearms are held together, with a large circular geometric design in red linework spanning both wrists. Black and grey brushstroke shading, dotwork texture and small red star-like marks surround the central motif and extend up the arm. The mixed palette is set against a black top and a dark, textured ground.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The net came up from the Ellen Mary at half past four, still wet, and your father dropped it across the quay wall without looking at you. "Red twine, the cheap stuff from Hull," he said. "Mend the circle first. Everything else hangs off it." You knelt on the cold granite with the needle between your teeth and the tar smell in your hair, working the knots while the gulls argued over the bait boxes.

Saltcombe was a town that kept its lamps lit late for the herring men and never asked why. Mrs Okonedo at the chandlery sold you a paper of sail thread for threepence and told you the sky was loose again, that the stars had been coming down the lanes at night and getting caught in people's washing. You laughed. Then you went back to the net and found the great ring of it gone slack in one place, a hole the size of a fist where the lines had frayed through.

You tied the knot the way your mother taught you, two half hitches and a third for luck. When you lifted the ring to the light, each crossing of the mesh threw back a small red point, as though the net had snagged the rising stars and was holding them still. Your father came along the wall with his hands in his coat and stood at your shoulder, saying nothing for a long while.

"There," he said at last. "That'll hold them." He took the far edge and you walked it up the slipway together, one hand each side, the way you would carry a sheet between you, until the whole circle hung over the harbour and the first stars spilled through its red lines onto the dark water below.
