A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The herring boats had been gone three days when Ailsa Corrie found the net on the north shingle, tangled around a drowned gull and a length of rope gone soft as cheese. She knelt in the wrack and worked the mesh loose one knot at a time, counting the diamonds the way her grandmother had taught her, by touch rather than sight, because the wind off Skerra never let a lamp stay lit.

She carried it up to the mending shed where her uncle Tam used to sit. On the whitewashed wall he had scratched a chart in chalk and never wiped it: lines running diagonal like rain, dots for the skerries, crosses for the wrecks. He used to say the island wrote its currents in diamonds, and that anyone who could read a net could read the sea. She laid the mesh across the bench and found a single diamond with no cross in it, only a clean cut where a knot had been.

He had gone out alone in the spring, and for a year she had told the village he was working the mainland ferries. Now she knew the cut was his, and that he had tied the last knot himself before the tide turned. She threaded a needle with tarred twine and stitched a cross into the gap, then a small dot beside it, for the living. Outside, the sea came in grey and steady, and a gull feather snagged in the mesh lifted in the draught and settled again.

She hung the net on the peg by the door. At first light the sun came through the open weave and laid its shadow across the flagstones, the same lattice as the chart on the wall, lines running true to the water.
