Celtic knot heart on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A heart-shaped Celtic knot sits on the outer upper arm, formed of interlacing bands that weave over and under one another. The bands are outlined in black and shaded in grey to give them a rounded, three-dimensional look. The design is centred in the frame against plain, lightly lit skin.

The rope had to go over and under, my father said, or it would never hold a heart's weight. I was nine and sulking on the lantern room steps, my fingers raw from the hemp we used to lash the railings after the gale took the old gutter. He sat cross-legged on the iron grating and made the shape without looking, one band dipping beneath another until the loops closed into a point like a shield.

Those Februaries the Skerry light went out more than it burned. The paraffin came by boat once a month when the sea allowed, and the wicks blackened if you trimmed them wrong. My father trimmed them right. He kept a ledger in pencil, columns of hours and oil and weather, and at the bottom of each page he drew a single knot, never the same twice, always closing on itself.

When he died the ledger went to the mainland with the rest of his things. I took the last page with me, the one he had drawn the night before the storm, and I found the knot in it had one band loose at the bottom, a loop left open. I thought he had been careless. It was years before I understood he had left it open so I would have somewhere to put my hand.

Now I tie it on the rail of every boat I am asked to fit, one loop open at the base, so the rope can be drawn tight when the time comes.
