A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mrs Ashdown kept the walled garden behind the mill, and the only tree that bore well in her time was a black cherry grafted onto a crab stock by a man nobody in the village remembered. It fruited hard every June, and the fruit was so dark it looked like stewed ink. Children were told to leave it be.

Her grandson Tobias came to stay the summer his father went to sea. He was nine and had a mouth on him, answering back to the vicar and calling the milkman a liar to his face. Mrs Ashdown said nothing about it. On the first hot evening she walked him out to the tree and told him that a tongue is like a cherry stone: keep it in too long and it splits the fruit from the inside.

He didn't believe her, so he picked the biggest cherry from the lowest branch and bit into it to prove her wrong. It burst. Juice ran down his chin and he laughed, and the laugh came out loud and sharp as a slap, so that the blackbirds went up out of the hedge all at once. After that every word he said came out quick and bright, and the village women said the boy was a firework with the lid off.

By August the cherries were splitting on every branch, and Tobias had stopped talking to anyone but the cat. On the last morning his grandmother found him kneeling by the wall with a stone in each hand, turning them over and over. She took one from him, pressed it into the soft earth, and waited. He did not say a word. The next spring a small black tree came up in that spot, and it never once bore fruit that anyone was willing to eat.
