Love script heart on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the side of an ankle. The design is an outlined heart with the word love written in flowing script, with the looping strokes of the letters extending past the heart's edge. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, set against pale skin and a dark background.

The gate at the end of Hollin Lane had been painted white every spring for as long as anyone could remember, and every spring Nan Ruddock went up with her tin of black enamel and her fine brushes and redid the lettering on the post. Mostly it was the name of the house. This year she came back down from the forest path with her hands shaking and asked me to hold the lamp.

She had decided on a heart. Not a painted one, she said, a proper one, drawn with a single line so you could tell where the word began and ended. I held the lamp while she ran the brush round the curve, then wrote LOVE inside it in her looping hand, the l and the v stretching past the edge as though they had somewhere else to be. "You never close a letter that means something," she said. "You let it run out into the world."
The forest at the edge of the village took the last light first. Under the oaks the air smelled of wet bark and the paraffin she used to clean her brushes. My brother had gone for the army in March and written twice. Nan had not said his name since. She wiped the brush on her apron and said he would see the post from the road if he ever came back that way, so she wanted it plain enough to find in the dark.
In the morning the paint had dried to a hard shine. I walked past it on my way to school and again on the way home, and each time the tail of the final e curled out past the frame and stopped just short of the road, as if it was waiting for someone to step onto it.
