The wind had been dead for nine days when Mother Haskett came up from the hold with a pot of red ochre and said the sea wanted a mouth. Nobody on the Mary Lowe asked her what she meant. They had sailed from Whitby with a cargo of salt cod and a captain who trusted nothing but the tide tables, and now the water lay flat as pewter under a sky the colour of old bread.

She painted the figurehead herself that night. The carved woman had lost her face to a storm off Dogger Bank twenty years before, and Haskett gave her a new one in pale paint and then a red so bright the deckhands swore it glowed in the lantern light. The teeth she left bare. The lower lip she drew caught gently between them, as if she were holding back a word she had no right to say.

The breeze came at dawn, though no one had spoken to it. Haskett said it had only wanted its silence kept. The sea, she told the cabin boy, does not care for shouting, and a crew that bites its tongue through the calms will be given the wind back in the end.

The boy, Tom Ferris, kept his mouth shut for three days after that, through the squalls and the hauling and the long watch when the mate cursed the bosun. On the fourth morning the sails filled and the figurehead's red mouth caught the first sun, and Tom laughed out loud for the first time since Whitby, then clapped a hand over his own lips and glanced aft to see whether the sea had heard.
