Red maple leaf with heart cut-out on leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A shaded red maple leaf with a prominent stem sits on the outer side of a lower leg, with a heart-shaped area of bare skin near its centre. The leaf uses soft gradients and dark maroon shadows along its edges and veins to give it a dimensional, lifelike look. The plain pale skin and dark background keep the focus on the leaf.

Ysolde Marrin carried the last red leaf down from the orchard wall because the frost had come early that year and the bees had not come at all. The orchard sat on the north slope of Caddow, where the old seed ships had set the maples in rows two hundred years before, when the sky over the valley still had weather in it. Nobody on the slope had seen a maple turn red since the glass went up over them.

The leaf was for the Reckoner, who lived in the tin house by the reservoir and kept the count of who had been born and who had gone up the cable. Her grandmother had said the Reckoner would take a leaf from anyone who asked properly, and would give back something worth more. So Ysolde climbed the stairs, knocked three times on the iron door, and held the leaf out in both hands.
The Reckoner was smaller than she had expected, and older, with a face like a walnut. She turned the leaf to the lamp. Where two lobes met, the veins had split and left a small clean hole in the middle, shaped exactly like a heart. "The tree did that itself," she said. "Nobody cut it. Some years the wind takes a piece and the sun takes the rest, and what's left is the part that was never needed."
Ysolde asked what the leaf was worth. The Reckoner laughed and pressed it flat between two panes of glass. "Keep the glass. Take the stem back up the slope and plant it where the frost hasn't reached. Come back when it's red."
Ysolde did. The stem took root in the dark soil under the wall, and by the next autumn it had given back a sapling, and the sapling had a heart in every second leaf.
