Outline lotus flower on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single lotus flower drawn in thin black outline, with pointed petals layered in a symmetrical fan shape. Two small solid dots sit beneath the flower. The linework is clean and unshaded, and the design is in black ink only against plain skin, with a grey floor and black shoes visible in the background.

The bath on the lamp room landing has gone the colour of weak tea, and you are the only one left to top it up before the relief boat comes. Maud's lotus had no business surviving on Scarrow Rock, yet she kept it alive for eleven winters in a tin bath, hauling rainwater up the one hundred and twelve steps in a bucket that knocked against every one.

"Keep the water still and the lamp honest," she said, tapping two pencil dots on the rim, one for the morning watch and one for the dark. You never knew whether she meant the plant or herself. When the glass cracked in the February gale and the wick smoked for three nights, you sat beside the bath and talked to it the way she did, about tide tables and the price of paraffin and the gannets who had stopped nesting on the ledge.
On the tenth night, a bud the size of a thimble split along its seams. You watched the petals unfold in the lamp's sweep, pale at the tips, fanning out steadily, as if they had been waiting for someone to stop being frightened of the sea long enough to look. The beam turned across the water, the foghorn fell quiet, and the gannets came back to the ledge in a grey rush.
In the logbook you wrote the weather, the sea state, the wind backing west. Then, underneath, in the square capitals Maud had taught you: LOTUS OPEN. LIGHT STEADY. You drew two small dots beneath it and left the pencil where it lay.
