Autumn forest scene inside a maple leaf

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large maple leaf fills the forearm, with dark silhouettes of trees and an animal shape set within its outline. The veins are drawn as fine dark lines that follow the leaf's structure. Yellow, orange, brown and black ink are blended with soft gradations to give the scene depth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dealer from Halifax held the leaf up to the shop window as if it might tell him its price. Late October light came through the maple, thinned by the glass, and the veins went dark one by one until the whole thing was a map of branches. I had told him it was only a leaf. My father pressed one every autumn between the pages of his survey ledgers, and he never once told me why this one was different from the rest.

Mr Ashdown turned it slowly. 'Someone has worked the shadow in,' he said. 'Look, there's the outline of a stag, right where the stem meets the vein.' I looked. I had looked at that leaf for thirty years and seen only the stem. Now the yellow ground behind the dark lines had become a clearing, and the brown lobes at the bottom were conifers standing in a row, blurred the way distance blurs them when you walk into woods at dusk.

He offered me four hundred pounds, which was more than I expected and less than the ledgers were worth to the county. I said no. He said I would regret it, and I said probably, but the forest was not for sale. I carried the leaf home along the canal path, still warm from his hand, past the real trees losing their colour one branch at a time.

That night I set it on the kitchen table under the lamp and switched off the overhead light. Along the central vein, a deer lifted its head out of the gold, exactly where my father used to rest his thumb when he showed me how to read a leaf from the inside out. I left the lamp burning until morning, in case it decided to walk off the page.
