Red peonies across a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

Three large red peony blooms sit side by side, with dark green and black leaves tucked around their edges. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine detail, giving the flowers a dimensional, realistic look. The design is shown in close view on a bare shoulder, with the dark background softening the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the last truck left the Hadleigh field, my hands smelled of turpentine and the ticket booth had already been sold for scrap. Mum always said a fair was three weeks of noise and a lifetime of packing up. I was nineteen that summer and painting the backdrop for the Peony Booth, a plywood frame with a garden on the back wall so the punters would believe they were winning something lovely. Nobody bothered to tell them the flowers were only ever going to be paint.

Old Harold Pike had taken the design from his late wife's sketchbook. She had drawn peonies every summer she toured, three heads to a page, petals folded like pleated silk. He wanted them bigger than life, so I mixed a crimson that would stand up to sunlight and shaded each bloom until the edges looked damp with dew. Harold stood behind me with a mug of tea going cold in his hand, and for an hour he said nothing at all, which from Harold was a kind of applause.

On the final night he asked for a fourth flower, white, tucked behind the others. I told him white wouldn't sit over red. He said Edith had told him exactly the same thing in 1974, then painted it anyway, and the white one was the only bloom in her sketchbook that had ever been finished. I did it in the dark with a borrowed torch, and by morning it had dried into the wood as if it had always been there.

We broke the booth down at six. Harold wrapped the plywood in an old tarpaulin and wouldn't let anyone else lift the corner. Somewhere past Chelmsford, a child will win a goldfish in front of three red peonies and a white one, and none of them will ever wilt.
