Red rose with green leaves on chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large red rose with layered petals sits across the upper chest, close to the collarbone, with green leaves at its sides. Black outlines define the petals and leaves, while red and green washes give a loose, watercolour-like finish with some darker shading inside the bloom. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame, with the shoulder and a grey top visible at the edges.

The council sent the painters into Harrow House on a Tuesday, and by Thursday the fourth-floor stairwell was the colour of wet cardboard. I stood on the landing with a carrier bag cutting into my fingers and counted the cracks in the render, and something in me gave up. So I climbed back to my flat, fetched the tin of red watercolour and the sable brush my son had left behind when he moved to Leeds, and started on the wall beside the bin chute.

The first petal took two hours. I worked in the grey light from the window, wetting the paper-thin layers so they ran into each other the way rain runs down a windscreen. Ruth from 4B came out to see what the smell was about and stood with her arms folded until I asked her to hold the torch steady. By the time the rose had its leaves, a green so dark it was nearly black at the stalks, half the floor had gathered on the stairs with their phones out.

The housing officer came on Monday with a clipboard and a face like a closed door. He studied the bloom for a long time, the black outline thick where I had pressed hardest, the red bleeding into the paint like dawn through a curtain. Then he asked who had signed off the work. I said the wall had. He wrote something down and went away, and I assumed that was the end of it.

Nobody painted over it. In October a new notice went up by the lifts asking residents to keep the stairwells clear, and beneath it someone had taped a single rose cut from a garden centre, its stem still wet. I still don't know who left it. I carried it up to my flat and put it in a jam jar on the windowsill, where the lamps from the car park caught the petals the same way the wall did.
