Red poppies on upper back
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A cluster of five red poppies with dark centres and a small closed bud sits on the upper back, with several green leaves trailing from the stems. The poppies have bold dark outlines and red shading that deepens towards their edges, giving them a solid, graphic look. The design is arranged in a diagonal sweep across the shoulder blade, with the largest bloom near the middle.

Sit yourself down on that bench, the wind doesn't get in here, and mind the pigeon, he's been eyeing your crisps since you came through the ticket gate. The last train to Hexley isn't due for forty minutes, so you've time for the poppies, if you want them. You will want them, because nobody ever believes me about the cutting.

In my father's day they drove the new line straight through Coldharbour Bank, and the clay came up the colour of old brick. Nothing grew on it for two summers. Then one June the whole embankment went red overnight, as if somebody had spilt a tin of paint down the hill and never bothered to wipe it. Stationmaster Pryce said it was seed off the grain wagons. My mother said it was the clay remembering something. Dad went out with a bucket and came back with his cap full of seed, which he carried up to the signal box, because Mrs Ashdown had lost her boy in the spring and needed something to look at from her window.
She planted every seed in a row along the fence, five heads to a stalk, and she counted them out loud each morning while she trimmed the lamp wicks. The 4:10 used to slow down at that bend, though the driver swore blind he'd never touched the brake. Nobody asked it to. It simply did.
And if you're wondering why that bud on the wall of platform two never opens, that's her doing. She said one should always be left waiting, in case somebody else needed a reason to come back. Now, there's your train coming round the bend, and you've still got your crisps.
