Red poppy on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large red poppy blooms near the wrist, with thin dark stems running down the forearm to unopened buds and small green leaves. The petals are built from loose, blended red washes with soft edges, and the centre is dark with touches of blue and green. The raised hand and forearm are set against a plain black background, which makes the red ink stand out strongly.

The frost had not yet lifted from the lane when Ada Penrose came down to the bottom garden with a spade over her shoulder and found the poppies already open. They stood along the wall in a row, red as cut meat, their heads turned towards the house as if counting who had come out.

Her brother Tom had sold the ploughing horse in October and the cider press in November, and by Candlemas there was nothing in the larder but a sack of barley and a jar of lard. Ada knew what the old woman at the mill said about poppies: cut a head at dusk, steep the seeds in warm milk, and a child would sleep through the worst of a hungry month. She did not believe it. She cut one anyway.
That night the wind came over the wall smelling of rain. Ada lay awake listening to Tom cough through the partition, and at first light she went down again with the knife. The buds on the lower stems had split open in the dark, and each held a single bead of dark sap, shining on the stalk like ink on a nib. She pressed her thumb to one and it came away red.
She scattered the seed in the lane where the carts turned and the mud would keep it. By June the lane was a river of colour, and nobody in the village went hungry that summer, though nobody could say why. Tom called it luck. Ada let him. Every spring she walks the wall with her spade, counting the heads, and the heads count her back.
