Red poppies on a lower leg
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three translucent red poppies, with one large bloom at the top and two smaller flowers lower down, joined by thin dark stems. The petals are built up with soft, layered washes of red that fade into lighter areas, while the stems and dark centres give strong contrast. The flowers are arranged diagonally across the limb against plain skin, with a red and black palette.

Maud had been told the poppies would not survive the move, that the seed her gran kept in a film canister had been dead since 1987. She dug the bed anyway, on the Saturday after the removal van left, and raked the stony soil of the new back garden in Margate until her knuckles were grey with it.

For a month there was nothing but couch grass and a stubborn elder. Then, along the foot of the crumbling wall, a rosette of hairy leaves appeared, and by June a bud the size of a thumb tip, bent over like a closed fist. She stood at the back door with her tea going cold and watched it open. The first bloom was so thin she could see the kitchen window through its petals, and the red was not one red but a dozen, poured in layers and thinning at the edges like wine held up to a lamp.
She sent a photograph to Iris, the neighbour who had kept her gran's tins after the funeral. Iris rang back within the hour. "Those came from the verge on the Isle road," she said. "Your gran pulled one out of the ditch the summer before she died. Said it was the only thing that ever came back where it wasn't wanted." Maud looked at the wall, the cracked mortar, the three flowers leaning towards each other on their dark wiry stems, and thought that perhaps the poppies had simply done what she had.
