Dotwork lotus on the inner wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey lotus flower tattoo sits on the inner wrist and runs down toward the forearm, with a thin stem extending towards the hand. The petals are built from dense stippled dots that fade into lighter areas, with solid black shading at the centre of the bloom. The photograph is monochrome, with the open palm and wrist lit softly against a dark background.

The last lotus the Halloran Brothers ever sold was stippled by my own hand, one dot at a time, on a canvas sheet strung behind the lorry in a car park beside a Lincolnshire chip shop. I was nineteen and had a steady wrist and a pot of Indian ink that never dried out. Papa said the dots would catch the light from the back row, and they did, though by then the back row was mostly pigeons.

The real lotus was Teodor's work. He built it from ash slats and copper hinges, twelve petals that folded shut like a fist and opened on a pulley when the spotlight found them at the finale. For thirty summers it was the thing people came for. Then the councils stopped giving us the rec grounds, the children found their phones, and the petals began to stick. Teodor oiled them every night and swore at them every morning.
On the last night in Boston, Lincolnshire, there were eleven people in the tent. Teodor climbed the scaffold anyway, in his shirtsleeves, and I watched his shadow stretch across the canvas where I had once painted the centre of the bloom solid black, so the flower seemed to be keeping something back. He pulled the cord. The petals stuttered, then opened, slow and stiff, and for a moment the light came up through them the way I had always hoped it would.
Nobody clapped. Teodor climbed down, folded the flower back into its crate by himself, and we drove south with the stem sticking out through the tailgate. Rain pricked the canvas all the way to the A1, a dot at a time.
