Haldane wants it cut back before the wedding party arrives from Carlisle. I told him the roots are older than his deed and that a rose which has survived two sieges and a roof fire can see off a pair of shears. He laughed, then sent me up the ladder anyway. On the third rung I found a dark knot of wood at the crown, shaped like a fist closed around a stone, and under it a bud the colour of the cut on my thumb.

I didn't cut it. I left the bud and wrote the rest of the afternoon into the parish book instead, so Haldane could not say I had been idle. The family lion is still over the gate, worn to a smudge, but the rose has the last word on the stone now.

If you come home at Michaelmas, bring your good boots. It wants someone to see it open through the glass, and I am too old to climb twice.
