Bare tree on thigh with forearm sketch
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bare tree with branches spreading upward and a cluster of roots and falling leaves beneath it is tattooed on the outer thigh. A separate sketched design with a figure and geometric shapes runs along the forearm, and the person is shown from the waist to the knees. The linework is fine and grey-black, with light shading and no colour ink, set against a white shirt, denim shorts and a window ledge.

I left at nine and walked the long way round by Coronation Road, past the school railings, because I wanted to see the sycamore before the new block went up.

They'd taken it down in March. The stump is still there, flat and grey as a dinner plate, and someone has pushed a tin of wilted tulips into the middle of it. Under the fence the council has left a heap of its leaves, brown and curled, already sinking into the mud. I crouched and turned a handful over and found the root that had lifted the tarmac by the bike shed, the one we used to sit on to eat crisps during break. It was thicker than my wrist and went on under the wall as if it had somewhere to be.
I took three leaves and a bit of that root, which I know is theft, and I've put them in the envelope with this letter so you can see what I mean. You always said the tree was just a tree. Maybe it was. But the things it dropped kept going somewhere after we'd stopped looking up.
