Red rose inside a maple leaf on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A detailed red rose in bloom fills a maple leaf outline, with its petals curling outward from a tightly wound centre. The rose uses smooth gradients from bright red to deep maroon and near-black shadows, with pale highlights along the petal edges. The tattoo sits on the outer thigh against plain skin, with a dark garment visible at the top edge of the frame.

The stencil had been cut for a maple leaf, and Ruth Ansell had spent the morning cursing it. The ferry's new name would go across the bow in gold, and the harbour board wanted a leaf beneath it, sharp-lobed and proud, the sort visitors photographed. But the paper kept tearing where the points met, and by eleven the leaf looked like a bruise somebody had tried to iron flat.

She sat on an upturned crate by the slip with her brushes wrapped in a rag and the tide creeping under the pilings. Gulls argued over a split bait box. Across the water, Captain Harrow's grandson was hosing down the wheelhouse, humming something with no tune. Ruth thought about her mother, who had grown roses in old tar drums behind the chandlery and never let a bloom go to seed without cutting it for the church. She thought about how those reds went dark at the heart, almost black where the petals folded back on themselves.
So she stopped fighting the stencil. She mixed a maroon her mother would have called too brown, and where the leaf wanted to be solid she laid in a rose instead, petals curling outward from a tight wound centre, the maple lobes left standing around it like a frame. The first stroke wobbled. The third did not.
When the board's man came down at four, he squinted at the bow and asked where the leaf had gone. Ruth wiped her hands on her apron and told him it was still there, only it had decided to flower. He did not dock her a penny, and the ferry sailed on the morning tide with a rose on its bow.
