Red rose with black vines on the abdomen
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A shaded red rose with green leaves sits on bare skin, with black swirled vines curling out from its upper left and lower right. The rose uses soft gradients of red and dark tones for depth, while the vines are bold black linework. Colour ink dominates the design, and a navel piercing and grey waistband are visible at the edge of the frame.

The inn at the top had been shut since the winter the lower bridge went. She planted the cutting against its north wall, where black bindweed already crept over the stones, and she cut the dead wood away with the bread knife because the proper pruning blade had gone down the valley with her husband. Each evening she hauled water from the spring in a pail that slopped down her skirts and soaked her boots.
Ruben came through in October with the last of the drovers, and he stopped to ask why a woman was tending a bush in a place with no custom. She told him the truth, which was that she was waiting to see whether the rose would let her stay. He laughed, then looked again at the leaves, which had gone the dark green of pine needles, and he did not laugh after that.
Ruben's cart did not come back up the pass that spring, but the rose did. Each morning Marta climbed to the col with the bread knife in her apron and found one more bloom open against the lintel, red and tight as a fist, its vines wound up to the place where the inn sign had hung. She left the gate unbarred.
