Realistic red rose on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A red rose in full bloom fills most of the frame, with its layered petals shaded in soft gradients from deep crimson to lighter pink. Small water droplets with highlights sit across the petals and a green leaf at the lower right, and the leaves are shaded in fine detail. The tattoo is rendered in colour against black shading that fades into the surrounding skin.

Dilys had been out since half four, crouched between the rows of old red climbers at the bottom of Pennick Farm, counting dew. The show at Bramhurst was on Saturday, and the judges wanted a bloom that hadn't been knocked by wind or hand. The only way to be sure was to watch the water sit on the petals and decide whether it would hold until ten.

Her son Owen came down the path with two mugs of tea and the dog trailing behind him. He held one out without a word, then looked at the bush by the gate. "That one's bruised on the outside petal, Mum. Anyone with eyes would see it." She didn't answer. She was looking at the leaf at the bottom of the stem, where three beads of water had gathered and caught the light like something somebody had dropped and forgotten.

That was the bloom she wanted, the one she had almost walked past. It had opened in the night on the far side of the wall, where her husband had planted it the spring before he died, and nobody had thought to stake it. Its petals were deeper at the heart than at the edge, and when she tipped it toward the sun, the drops rolled slowly across the crimson and did not fall.

She cut it with the kitchen scissors, wrapped the stem in damp newspaper and carried it up the path with the water running off the tips of the petals and onto her wrist. Owen took the mugs from her hands. Behind them, on the bottom wall, the dew went on shining on the leaves with nobody there to count it.
