A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, the fire is low and I won't shout it twice. In the kingdom of Harrowmere there was a clockmaker's daughter named Orla Venn, who kept a pocket watch on a silver chain and never once let it run slow. Her father had made it for her before the sickness took him, and she wound it each night the way other girls said their prayers. The watch was the only thing in Harrowmere that told the truth about time.

Now the old lizard-hunters of the marsh told a different story. Out beyond the reed beds lived a beast that had swallowed the sun one summer and never quite given it back, and its skull lay bleached in the sedge where it had died, jaws hinged wide as a gate. Orla went out with a lantern and a hook, and she found it just as the stories said, teeth like rusted nails, the bones of it pale under the leaves that grew up through the eye sockets. She sat beside it until the watch in her palm ticked past midnight.

What she learned there, she never told the village. She only came home at dawn with dirt on her knees and a single green leaf pressed in the back of the watch case. The clocks in Harrowmere stopped that morning, every one of them, and they say the hour has not moved since. Some nights, if you hold your breath at the edge of the marsh, you can hear the jaws close softly, and the watch begin again.
