Castle, moon and sleeping face on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bold colour tattoo on the lower leg shows a black castle silhouette with spires behind a large yellow moon. Below, a pale face with closed eyes and a red bow sits between dark wings, with a red book, a golden shield-like shape and a beaded chain ending in a red triangular pendant. Thick black outlines and flat fills in yellow, red, purple and gold define the design, which is framed by the leg and a plain white bedsheet.

Dear Nell, the lift in Cranbrook House has been broken since Tuesday, so I've been walking the stairs up to the fourteenth floor with a carrier bag of shopping and your old school atlas under my arm, which is why this letter is late. Mrs Adeyemi on eleven says the council will fix it by the weekend, same as they said in March.

Last night the moon came up over the car park the colour of a pound coin in the bath, and I could see the mill chimney and the cathedral spire off Grange Road lined up like a drawing of somewhere else. Your niece Ruby was supposed to be asleep by eight. She was not. She had her bedside lamp on and the bow from her school uniform tied round the top of her head, reading that library book about the girl who runs away to a castle to find a key. I told her she'd be shattered at school. She told me the book said the castle only opens after midnight. I said the castle could wait for the morning like the rest of us.

She fell asleep with the book open on her chest, the way you used to, and I sat on the end of the bed until the streetlamps went off at half four. Her face was pale in the blue light, eyes shut tight, mouth open a bit, and I thought about how you used to fall asleep like that on the bus home from Bridlington with your shoes still on.

I'm writing because I've decided to take the Leeds job. Don't tell Mum yet. I'll come up on the Sunday train and we can have chips on the harbour wall like we did. Keep the atlas. I'll pick up the key from Mrs Adeyemi on my way out.

Love, Dan
