Robin and rose on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A plump robin perches on a leafy branch, with a peach-coloured rose and green leaves rising behind it. The bird is shaded in soft greys with an orange breast, and the rose and leaves use bold colour with defined outlines. Small dots and a light speckled background fill the spaces around the motifs, which are arranged in a tight vertical composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The robin came aboard off the Azores while the fog was still lifting, and by noon it had eaten the crumbs from Mr Halloran's biscuit tin and claimed the foredeck as its own. Nobody on the Marguerite Ellis would touch it. Old Pruett said a robin on the rigging meant a drowned man wanted a passage home, and the cook swore it was the same bird that had followed them out of Bristol and simply hadn't had the sense to get off.

Tobias Pell, nineteen and the only one aboard who had ever grown anything, took it upon himself to feed the creature from his own ration of hard tack. He kept a rose cutting in a tin pot lashed under the galley stove, a dog rose he had dug from his mother's garden wall in Devon, its leaves already going yellow in the salt air. Each morning the robin sat on the rim of that pot and considered the leaves as if checking them for greenfly.

Then the wind died for nine days. The water casks went down to a finger's depth, the sails hung like wet washing, and Pruett finally told Tobias to tip the rose over the side before it stole a mouthful from someone who needed it more. Tobias carried the pot to the rail and stood there a long while. On the tenth morning a breeze came off the east smelling of cut hay and land, and the bird rose from the pot and went after it without a backward look.

Tobias found a single green shoot curled from the soil that afternoon, no longer than his thumb. He did not tell Pruett. He only sat with the pot in his lap and watched the horizon, where the wind had come from.
