Cardinal and blossom on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A red cardinal perches on a branch surrounded by pink blossoms, green leaves and buds, with a string of beads looping around the design. A dotted circle filled with a soft yellow, green and blue gradient sits behind the bird. Bold black outlines and smooth shading give the piece a classic flash look, with bright colour dominating the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bird came over on the morning boat and would not get off it. It sat on the rail among the crates of onions while the deckhand swore at it, and when the ferry was tied up at Inish Carrig it hopped down the gangway as if it had paid for the crossing. By the second week it was waiting on the bench outside the bakery, red as a pillar box against the grey harbour wall. Mrs Dunne said a cardinal in March meant a wrong turn somewhere, and gave it a crust anyway.

You had your grandmother's rosary in the pocket of your oilskin, the silver beads gone dull from her thumb. She had told you to return it to the chapel before the spring tides, and you kept putting it off, running the beads through your fingers on the walk up past the blackthorn hedges and counting them the way you had counted the days left on the island before the job on the mainland. The bird followed you up the lane, from hedge to gate, always a little ahead, as if it knew the way better than you did.

On the last morning you went up to the headland before the light came. The sky over the sound was turning from ink to the colour of a peach, and the blossom on the blackthorn had opened overnight. You unwound the beads and hung them over a low branch, one loop, then another. The cardinal landed beside them and looked at you sideways, and for once you did not count anything at all.
