Rolling pin with "They see me rollin'" banners

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a rolling pin in outline with shaded stripes along its barrel, set between two lettered ribbon banners. The upper banner reads "They see me rollin'" in large script, and the lower banner reads "They hatin'" in capitals, with scrolled flourishes at the sides. The design uses clean black linework and grey shading on a plain white background, with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pauline Dunmore had been winning the Hollins Fete pie contest since 1987, and the committee had stopped pretending the judging was a surprise. This year I was the one who'd made the rough puff. My mother's rolling pin, the beech one with the worn stripes down the barrel, sat on the trestle table in the marquee like a bailiff's notice.

Pauline came over with a plate of her shortbread and a smile sharp enough to slice it. "Lovely pastry, Carol. Bit thick at the edges, though. Some of us were taught to roll with a bit of wrist."

I didn't answer. I picked up the pin, dusted it with flour, and rolled a slow, deliberate stroke across the table where her shortbread was cooling. Then another. The woman beside us, who sold jam and had never feared anyone, put a hand over her mouth.

"Don't you dare," Pauline said.

"Who, me?" I said. "I'm only getting the creases out."

When the judges came round, the tea urn had gone cold and the bunting was sagging, and the rosette went to my apple turnovers. Pauline didn't speak to me for the rest of the afternoon. On the drive home I saw her in the car park, pulling a tray of shortbread from her boot with her eyes fixed on my car. My mother's pin rolled gently on the back seat, and I laughed the whole way down the lane.
