Allons-y script lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing of the word Allons-y in a flowing, looped script with decorative curls on the capital A and the final y. The linework is bold and even, with thick and thin strokes and a hyphen joining the two parts of the word. The design sits alone on a plain white background with no colour or shading.

Dear Tom, the boats are all out of Gullwick this morning, and Mrs Pardoe has been counting gulls on the breakwater the way Dad used to count the ferries. The harbour wall is still wet from the night's rain, and the chalk board outside the chandlery says Mackerel 4 quid, which he would have called robbery before breakfast.

You'll remember Dad at the top of the slipway every September, cap pushed back, waving the rest of us down the steps and shouting allons-y. He said his Breton grandmother used it for everything, for bedtime and for funerals and for the fish van, and that it meant let's go whatever the weather was doing. We thought it was showing off. Mum called it his French.

I went through the wheelhouse on Thursday to clear out the bunk. Behind the chart drawer I found his oilskin still on its hook, and in the top pocket a folded card in his square capitals: Tell the boys to mind the bar on the ebb. Under that, smaller, as if he'd added it on the way out of the door, he'd written the other word again.

So I'm taking the Mary Ellen out on Saturday on the morning tide, and I'd like you aboard. Get the early train from Ipswich and I'll meet you at the steps. Bring the good rope and your bad knees, and don't argue about the coffee. Allons-y, Tom. The water won't wait for either of us.

Love, Jen
