The apple had been sitting on the windowsill since Monday, going soft on one side, and nobody in Form Four would own up to putting it there. Miss Hallam did not ask twice. She turned to the blackboard and wrote the word in one unbroken line, the way she wrote everything, so the letters ran into each other like rain finding a drain.

Danny Ferris watched the chalk loop round the T and the two Es and felt his face go hot. He had taken that apple from the vicarage cart on the Saturday, bitten it at the lychgate and tossed the core over the wall for the sheep. Now the whole room was staring at him, and Miss Hallam was not staring at anyone. She tapped the last R with the flat of the chalk until a little white dust drifted onto the sill. 'You can spell a thing,' she said, 'long before you know how to hold it.' Then she gave him the duster and told him to start on the windows.

Thirty-one years later Danny ran the cider press at the bottom of Chapel Lane, and the crates of Bramleys stood stacked by the door like sandbags. A lad came in one October morning with a torn coat and a fistful of crab apples, asking whether a man might be paid to sweep, and Danny heard himself say yes before he had thought about it.

That afternoon he found the boy at the bench, peeling a windfall with his tongue between his teeth. Danny took the knife, cut one long curl of skin without breaking it, and laid it on the bench in the shape of a loop. The boy looked at it, then at him, and asked what it was meant to say. Danny picked up a stub of chalk from his apron pocket and wrote the word on the wall beside the press, slowly, the way she had taught him.
