The band had packed up by three, but Marguerite still hummed the last tune while she counted out the till at the Blue Oval. Her cousin Ada leaned on the bar, pearls looped twice around her wrist, and watched her sweep the floor of confetti. The club had been called the Oval since the first owner ordered a painted frame for the mirror behind the bottles, and the name had stuck long after the mirror cracked.

That night a stranger had come in with a feather pinned to a green velvet cloche and asked for Marguerite by her stage name. He left a card with a single yellow rose pressed flat inside it, the petals gone the colour of old butter. Ada said it was a warning. Marguerite said it was a bill, because roses that had been paid for always came with a price tag somewhere.

She found the price in the bottom of the cash tin: a string of pearls, wrapped in tissue, with a note in the same careful hand. It asked her to meet him at the river steps before the lamps went out. She tucked the pearls into her bodice, took her coat from the hook, and went out into the cold without telling Ada where.

The river was black and quick. The stranger was waiting with the feather in his hand, and he did not look surprised to see her. He only held out the rose and said, very gently, that the bill had been settled years ago, and she had the receipt around her neck.
