Rosary heart and cross on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a rosary curved into the shape of a heart, with dotted beads outlining the curve, a triangular centrepiece and a cross hanging from the bottom. The linework is thin and the beads are solid black dots, with no tonal shading or colour. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against plain skin, with patterned fabric visible at the edges of the frame.

Now sit yourselves down, the pair of you, and mind the sawdust, because I am only telling this once. It was the winter of the big snow, and the Crown Ballroom in Stockport had a floor so polished you could see the chandeliers in it. Mrs Agnes Divney came in every Saturday in her good navy coat, and she never danced. She sat by the pillar with her black beads wound through her fingers, counting under her breath while the band played Glenn Miller for the soldiers' wives.

Then one Saturday the string broke. Forty-odd beads went skittering across the boards like frightened mice, under chairs, under the drummer's stool, into the turn-ups of trousers. Everybody stopped. The band stopped. Old Frank Keogh, who had a leg that wouldn't bend, got down on his knees with the torch from the cloakroom, and the whole hall got down with him, one bead at a time, until the floor looked like a field after hail.
Here is the part nobody believes. When Agnes had every bead back in her palm, she didn't thread them on the string again. She tied the loose end around the little silver triangle that had come off her grandmother's medal, and she bent the beads into a heart, a wobbly one, and hung the cross off the bottom like a full stop. Then she laughed, which nobody had heard her do in years, and walked out into the snow while the band played on behind her.
So if you ever lose something you can't afford to lose, remember that floor. Everything rolls under something, and somebody always gets down on their knees with a torch.
