Rosary anklet tattoo with cross
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a rosary wrapped around the ankle as two bead strands, with a small medallion at the centre and a chain running down to a larger cross resting on the top of the foot. The beads and cross are shaded in black and grey with soft highlights, giving them a dimensional look. The subject sits against a dark, glossy backdrop, with the foot filling most of the frame.

The ferryman at Kestrow Ford took no coin from the widow Ilse. He took the string of jet beads she wore twice around her ankle, the ones that had been her husband's, and he counted them out loud as the punt pushed off. Kestrow was a kingdom of reed and grey water, where a crossing lasted exactly as long as a prayer, and the ferryman had never once been wrong about the length.

Halfway over, the mist thickened until the near bank vanished. Ilse sat with her hands in her lap and said the beads were not for the dead. They were for the living, who had to keep counting. Hob had heard grief dressed up as a dozen different reasons, but never that one. He let the punt drift while she unhooked the little medallion at the centre of the chain, a worn saint with no face left on her, and held it over the water.
"Keep the cross," she said. "It's the heavy one. The beads I'll carry." She dropped the medallion. The chain followed it down in a slow loop, bead after bead, until only the iron cross remained hanging from her fingers. Hob took it, because the ferryman always takes the last payment.
Then the reeds parted and the far bank came up out of the grey, close enough to touch. Ilse stepped onto the stones and walked up the path without looking back, and Hob sat in the still water holding a cross that was warm from her hand, counting nothing at all.
