Rose and clock on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose fills the back of the hand, its petals formed by a clock face with Roman numerals and a gear wheel at the edge. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the rose and metal parts a sense of volume. The image has a dark background, and the tattoo is the main focus, with tattooed letters visible across the fingers.

Uncle Desmond wound the church clock by hand every Sunday, and on the morning of my sister's wedding he was still arguing with the verger about the minute hand. I had the job of carrying the pocket watch down the aisle, a silver thing that had belonged to our grandfather and stopped at twenty past four sometime in the Thatcher years. Nobody had got it going again. I'd spent three nights at the bench in the back room of the shop on Harrow Street, a loupe screwed into my eye and the radio murmuring the shipping forecast, trying to coax the balance wheel back to life.

On the day, the watch ticked. I still don't know how. Maybe it was the damp in the vestry, or maybe I'd finally seated the mainspring right. Halfway up the aisle it gave a small shiver and began again, and my sister's new husband looked down at it, then at me, as if I'd performed a conjuring trick.

Afterwards, in the car park behind the Red Lion, Desmond took it from me and held it up to the light. The face was cracked across the Roman numerals and the gear train at its rim had worn thin, but he tapped the glass with one knuckle and said, "You didn't fix it, you know. You just let it remember what it was for."

I didn't argue. The rose engraved on its back had gone soft with handling, its petals worn into rings. I slipped the watch into my jacket and felt it warm against my ribs, counting.
