Compass over a world map on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed compass with a rose and needle sits at the centre of the design, with a pen and a rolled object near the bottom. Behind it, a world map with coastlines and country labels fills the forearm. Fine shading gives the compass metal a three-dimensional look, and the image is a close, well-lit view of the forearm against a blurred background.

The brass compass has stopped again, and you know it before you open the lid, because the needle hangs limp and sulks at north like a dog that won't come in. Outside the chart room the Thames is making its ordinary night noise, gulls quarrelling over the fish market and a bell buoy somewhere past the bridge. Mr Okafor left the lamp burning, which means he left you the job of finishing the Siam sheet before the morning tide.

You spread the paper on the drawing board and weigh its corners with a pen, a rolled length of hemp and the cold stub of your tea. The coastline is almost right. Someone in Lisbon drew the Gulf of Thailand too fat, and you spend an hour correcting it with a fine nib, tapping ink into the sea until the lines sit true. At one o'clock a taxi hisses on the wet cobbles below and a woman laughs at something, and the sound climbs three floors and stops at your window like a question nobody answers.
Near two, the needle shivers and swings. You lift the compass, turn it a full circle on your palm, and watch the rose settle its points against the map's painted wind. Then you roll the chart tight, tie it with the rope, and walk down through the sleeping building into the street, where the lamps are the colour of weak honey and the river is black enough to hold every star that is not there.
