Rose and crescent moon on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm with a shaded black and grey rose covering the lower arm, its petals and leaves rendered with soft grey shading and dark linework. Above the wrist sits a small fine line crescent moon with a row of dotted lines hanging beneath it. The arm is angled across ripped pale blue denim, with a silver bracelet at the wrist and dark nail polish on the hand.

You have been climbing the iron stairs since the tide turned, and the lamp room is colder than the sea below it. Your father's hands are still on the brass pulley where he left them on Tuesday, when the fever took him ashore at Pelham. The lens is yours now, and so is the logbook, its last entry in his square capitals: LAMP LIT 1930. WIND SW. MOON HALF.

Out past Gannet Rock the water is black as ink. Somewhere out there your brother Tom is rowing the Mary Ann home with a sack of mackerel and no lantern, because he always swore the moon would light his way. You trim the wick the way you were shown, wipe the glass with a rag that smells of paraffin, and watch the crescent hang over the cliffs like a hook with a row of small bells dangling from it.
At midnight the beam begins to flicker. A crack runs across the third panel, thin as a hair. You have no spare pane. So you do what your mother did with her roses when the frost came: you stand a wooden shutter in front of the flame and cut slats from it to let the light through in one steady line, and you count the strokes of the bell buoy until your arms ache.
Near dawn a shape comes in under the cliffs, low in the water. The Mary Ann nudges the slipway, and Tom climbs out with the mackerel and a face full of relief. 'I saw your light,' he says, not looking up. 'Thought you'd gone soft and let it die.' You do not tell him about the shutter. You hand him the logbook and let him write the entry himself.
